Community Involvement
Greater Phoenix Leadership will focus its attention on major problems in the community and the state concentrating on those efforts where it can, because of its unique characteristics, be most effective in reaching constructive and definitive solutions. GPL will strive to build coalitions with other community groups and will work with them to achieve community goals.
Among GPL's Accomplishments:
- In 2006, GPL led the development of Science Foundation Arizona (SFAz), a nonprofit charitable organization created to build and strengthen medical, scientific and engineering research programs and infrastructure in areas of greatest strategic value to Arizona's competitiveness in the global bioscience economy. SFAz will actively engage scientific research, academic and medical institutions representing both the public and private sectors on a worldwide basis.
- GPL championed the development of the P-20 educational model. Progress includes passage of Arizona LEARNS, Arizona READS and Voluntary All-Day Kindergarten legislation.
- GPL helped draft and led efforts to secure passage of Proposition 301 to improve education in Arizona. GPL was instrumental in creating the Arizona Business and Education Coalition to provide a sustained business and education collaboration for superior K-12 education.
- GPL spearheaded efforts to gain voter approval of Proposition 400, the extension of the half-cent sales tax in Maricopa County to fund the region's transportation needs over the next 20 years.
- In 1993, GPL was instrumental in the development of the Jobs for Valley Youth program to provide high-school age Valley youth with the private sector job opportunities and to leverage existing training and placement resources.
Greater Phoenix Leadership is proud to be an active participant in the Business Coalition Business Council.
